PROPERTIES
Dibutylamine (DBA) is light yellow, clear liquid, miscible with almost all common organic solvents. It has limited miscibility with water. Stable under ordinary conditions, flammable and toxic.
APPLICATIONS
SURFACE PROTECTION
CORROSION INHIBITOR
Dibutylamine is used to inhibit corrosion of metal placed in contact with the ink composition, without adversely affecting the printing characteristics of the ink. There is a method for reducing the corrosiveness of an ink composition suitable for ink jet printing. By use of DBA as a corrosion inhibitor, it is possible to leave unaffected the beneficial properties of the ink jet formulation, such as adhesion and drying time of the ink. DBA does not destabilize the ink, as it does not substantially affect the critical physicochemical properties of the ink jet formulation.
The dibutylamine is disclosed as a corrosion inhibitors in de-icing and anti-icing agents for aircrafts, in an electrolyte used in a lead dioxide-zinc rechargeable-type cell and battery and in hydraulic fluids.
GRAFTING AGENT
It improves mechanical and physical properties of leather. Grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) monomer onto leather and immersing of grafted leather in different concentrations of dibutylamine increase its dye uptake.
RUBBER INDUSTRY
ACCELERATORS
Dibutylamine is used to produce dibutyl thiocarbamates which are employed as accelerators in the rubber chemical industries.
The vulcanization of either natural or synthetic rubbers takes place by cross-linking between the polymeric chains, thanks to the use of sulfur or peroxides. This is optimized by means of the use of accelerators capable of reducing the vulcanization times and of securing the reproducibility of the results relating to the properties of the manufactured articles. Among the vulcanization accelerators a class of "secondary accelerators" exists. They are useful as activators for thiazole-based primary accelerators. Example of such products is dibutylamine.
PVC INDUSTRY
PLASTICIZERS
Dibutylamine can be used as a plasticizer in PVC matrix.
ENVIRONMENT
CATALYSTS FOR POLURETHANE RESINS
There is a usage of DBA in technology for PUR recycling.
One of the methods used to recycle PUR products is to chemically break down PUR into its monomeric constituents and then re-use the monomers to make new PUR products.
Depolymerization of PUR into its chemical constituents is known as chemolysis.
Aminolysis is one of the chemolysis variants in which the PUR foam is reacted under heat and pressure with amines such as DBA. Aminolysis is still in the research stage.
CORROSION INHIBITOR
Dibutylamine pyrophosphate is employed as a corrosion inhibitor in an aqueous system.
INSECTICIDE
Dibutylamine is a key intermediate in the synthesis of the carbosulfan insecticide.
Other uses:
Stabilizers in the manufacture of emulsifiers .
Flotation agents.
Intermediates, catalsts in the production of pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals (crop protection agents, insecticides market)
Dye intermediates.
